Neftali Feliz looked amazing on Tuesday for the Texas Rangers. The 22 year old is trying to make the transition from a dominating closer to a starting pitcher for the 2 time American League Champion Texas Rangers. Well, so far so good. There is no question Feliz has an amazing fast ball. But for him to be successful he needs to be able to throw his secondary pitches for strikes. Feliz worked hard in the offseason, and Tuesday he showed us the potential he has. Feliz threw 7 innings, allowing no runs, 4 hits, 2 strikeouts ,and 2 walks. No bad for a 5th starter. But let me say that he has ace potential and I think he’ll be there within a few years…
Feliz, 7-6 with a 2.55 ERA and 74 saves in 162 2/3 innings as a reliever, was making his first start after 154 relief outings. The Rangers feel confident they have a suitable replacement at the back end of the bullpen in veteran Joe Nathan, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 263rd career save (second this season).
If Feliz can continue to grow on this performance, the Ranger’s future looks even brighter. Not only do the Rangers have one of the top offenses in baseball, but it’s now looking like they have one of the deepest pitching staffs in the majors. Can you say dynasty?
